Rich Carney

Rich Carney is the Special Collection Archivist for Wingate University. He manages all of the university archives and materials, as well as the congressional papers of Senator Jesse Helms which were gifted to the University in 1988.

Carney is an adjunct professor for Wingate's history department and created a course titled Introduction to Public History. Before joining Wingate, Carney worked for the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D.C. While with the National Archives, he was a supervisor for a joint digitization project with Ancestry.com and helped produce over 30 million digital images for online research. Carney began his career at the State Archives of North Carolina in Raleigh and currently serves as board president for the North Carolina Friends of the Archives.

Carney received his Bachelor of Arts in History from Appalachian State University in Boone and his Master's in Public History from North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Carney has a decade of experience in the archives and museum field that includes experience managing major digitization projects and creating immersive and interactive exhibits. He and his wife, Eliza, have two young daughters.
