A recent Google Alert notified us that Senator Helms is mentioned in an article about the new TV series, Mrs. America. The series is about the debate surrounding the Equal Rights Amendment, and specifically, the woman leading the fight against its ratification, Phyllis Schlafly. Senator Helms greatly admired and respected Schlafly and her commitment to the conservative movement and its ideology. Therefore, we are disappointed to read that Senator Helms is portrayed as showing anything but the utmost respect for Schlafly. Unfortunately, this is very typical of Hollywood which continues to attack conservatives and spread outright lies.

Senator Helms and Phyllis were both champions of the conservative movement, and held a strong mutual respect for each other centered on their strong moral principles and philosophical views. Often, Senator Helms spoke at events hosted by Schlafly and the Eagle Forum. Also, in 1979, Helms addressed a crowd at a “Phyllis Schlafly Tribute.”

When Senator Helms passed away on July 4, 2008, Schlafly penned an article entitled "Jesse Helms: The Most Important Senator of Our Times." In that article she wrote that Helms "was the authentic voice of conservatism for three decades. He was a role model of an incorruptible public official who adhered to principle despite the pressures that surround those with political power, and he gave us a standard by which others can be measured."

Phyllis Schlafly delivered a moving tribute in 1994 to North Carolina Senator Jesse Helms.

As you can see, Helms and Schlafly would never disrespect each other, and it's too bad the creators of Mrs. America have failed to present a complete and accurate history of an important time in our nation's history.
