Throughout his entire Senate career, Senator Helms remained an outspoken and loyal supporter of the United States military. He enlisted in the Navy during WWII and served as a recruiter until the end of the war. As a Senator, Helms was a loyal advocate for the Defense Department and the military and recognized how important the military was to the people of North Carolina.
